Seth Macfarlane Wants to Reboot Star Trek

17 Oct

Between Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show, Seth Macfarlane doesn’t need any more shows on the air. And he certainly doesn’t need any more money. But now he’s on the very long list of people who want to reboot Star Trek for television.

Macfarlane recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he would like to see a new version of Trek that returns to series to its glory days of the 1990s:

“I’d love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience.”

Interesting. Nothing against the ’90s shows, a decade that includes Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, but I would think if you’re pitching a new Star Trek reboot, you would at least say you want to get the show back to its 1960s roots. You know, the one that started it all. I mean, he’s really only singling out Enterprise as the series he wouldn’t want to be like. And that’s the one on which he guest starred:

Maybe Macfarlane recognizes that the J.J. Abrams movies are already trying to do that, since he basically admits in the piece that it’s unlikely Paramount would try and launch a new series on TV while the movies are making a bunch of money. Of course, he’s also the guy who said the 2009 Star Trek looked like “a bunch of gay guys working at an Apple store” at Comedy Central’s Roast of Charlie Sheen. He didn’t know how right he was.
